Local housing development lends a helping-hand to nearby gardening project

Local development ‘The Mill’ has lent a helping-hand to green-fingered Cardiff residents at the Grow Well project. The Mill Partnership, which includes Lovell, the Tirion Group and Cadwyn Housing Association, has recently made a donation of patio slabs and labour to the community garden initiative.

Grow Well is currently working a short distance away from The Mill in the garden of The Lansdowne surgery in Canton. The Mill Partnership strive to give back to the local community and aim to assist in any way possible to see local organisations flourish.

The project was kick-started by Grow Cardiff in partnership with the NHS, starting off as a pilot scheme three years ago; from the outset, the initiative has continued to thrive. Grow Well now provides two gardening sessions a week in Canton and Ely.

The Grow Well project’s mission is to support individuals and families in the local community through therapeutic gardening, social events and extended community activities and outreach all to encourage positive mental health within nature.

Overseeing the scheme is Project Officer David Kilner, who also delivers the gardening sessions. He has been with Grow Well from the very beginning - when funds were low and they had no garden. He and his team of dedicated colleagues can now reap the fruits of their labour; the project is now the proud owner of two established gardens, The Lansdowne Surgery, in Canton and Dusty Forge, in Ely.

The Mill Partnership’s contribution means that the project now also has a wheelchair accessible garden and a vegetable patch and fruit trees at the back of The Lansdowne Surgery. The trees and vegetable patch were grown by the Grow Well team whilst paving work was completed.

David said: “The paving of our garden space is greatly received. The Grow Well team has seen first-hand the benefits of community gardening and the incredible journeys people go on during their time with us.

“We are very happy that The Mill is able to support us so we can continue delivering this service, we want this project to continue to have a positive impact. It’s great to see big companies get so involved in the efforts of local organisations.”

The landscaping work was carried out by Daniel Phillips, owner of John Phillips Contractors. He said: “I first heard about the project through carrying out work at The Mill development and was really keen to get involved. The work on the paving was so important to wheelchair users and I’m really happy we’ve been able to make the garden accessible to them.”

The Mill, Canton, is bringing a new urban village to Cardiff, creating 800 contemporary homes at the former Arjo Wiggins paper mill site. They include 358 homes for open market sale by Lovell and 442 homes for rent – which will be managed by Cadwyn Housing Association – for the Tirion Group. The scheme is going ahead with the support of the Welsh Government and financial backing from the Principality Building Society, and is being developed by the Tirion Group in partnership with Lovell.
